Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

At St Mary’s Infant School we ensure that the needs of all children that can access mainstream schooling are met.  Each child is a special and important member of our community and we want them to achieve and become confident learners. We pride ourselves on finding out what each child needs and putting the right, personalised provision in place. Mrs Jennifer Downing, Headteacher, has the role of Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator (SENCo). Mrs Downing manages the provision for our pupils with any additional needs liaising closely with the class teachers, Special Needs Teacher and parents.  We find that timely, well targeted interventions often mean that children both make good progress and close the gap between them and their peers. Last year, for example, the impact of this provision led to all children, including those who had received extra support, achieving the expected national level or above both at the end of Year 1 and Year 2. In addition, the quality of our phonics teaching led to 100% of our Year 1 pupils achieving the expected standard in the annual national phonics assessment; this puts us in the top 2% of schools nationally.
