WELCOME TO KINGFISHER CLASS

Miss Deborah Parsons and Mrs Jo Bridges

Class Teachers

Your child will study a wide variety of topics across all national curriculum subjects as part of their studies at St Mary’s School. The table above provides an overview of the year one curriculum content for Kingfisher Class. Over the course of the year the children will enjoy a range of high quality texts in English. These will be brought to life through reading together, ‘one off’ special events, drama and writing sessions. The children will become more skilled in all aspects of Maths and will develop their understanding of number bonds, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (through sharing) within numbers to 100 as well as their knowledge of shape, space and measure.

Topics covered in Science will include: Animals including Humans, Plants, Seasonal changes and Materials In History children will develop their sense of chronology through the following: ‘Remembrance’, ‘The History of Toys’ and ‘The Seaside’. In Geography they will learn more about the world around them, increasing their knowledge of the ‘Countries of the UK’, looking at ‘Human and Physical Features’ and learning more about ‘Continents and Climates’. Kingfishers will increase their computer literacy using a range of programmes. They will learn how to stay safe online, how to code, make pictograms and create animated stories.

Our new ‘Above and Beyond’ sessions will give children time to experience cooking and Forest school throughout the year. They will also learn how to sew, make simple automators and do a little gardening. During ‘Wellbeing’ sessions, Kingfishers will learn how to keep their minds healthy through Yoga, forest walks and mindfulness.

In PE lessons, children will take part in gymnastics, dance and athletics. They will also have weekly sessions with our sports coaches to improve their football, touch rugby, kwik cricket, basketball and hockey skills. All this will culminate in a ‘Sports Day Spectacular’ during the Summer term.

A number of workshops and trips will take place throughout the year to bring learning to life for the children and you shall be advised about these in due course. For offsite activities, we shall require parents/carers to help supervise the children. Please fill in the relevant part of the forms and return if you are able to provide support.

Finally we look forward to sharing with you our wonderful Christmas Nativity production as well as our Kingfisher class assembly later in the school year – both a ‘must see’ and for which the children rehearse very hard and thoroughly enjoy performing to an audience. Thank you for visiting our page and please contact Mrs Bridges or Miss Parsons, the Kingfisher class teachers, with any queries you might have throughout the year.
