WELCOME TO WOODPECKER CLASS

Our Year 2 class is taught by Miss Lindsay Hemmingham.

In Woodpeckers, your child will study a wide variety of topics across all national curriculum subjects as part of their studies at St Mary’s School. The table above provides an overview of the year two curriculum content for Woodpecker Class.

Over the year, the children will enjoy a range of exciting texts in English, covering various genres. We enjoy lots of different activities linked to these texts, such as class reading, drama, art and writing sessions - the children love 'publishing' their work in our class book!

In Maths, they will work on developing their understanding of number and place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division, as well as their knowledge of shape, space, money, fractions and measure. We do this through a combination of practical activities and written methods, where children can use a range of physical resources to continue to support their understanding.

Topics covered in Science will include: Animals including Humans, Living Things and their Habitats, Everyday Materials and Plants. In History, children will develop their sense of chronology through the following: ‘Famous People of History’, ‘Great Fire of London’, 'History of Space Travel', and ‘History of Nursing’. In Geography, they will learn more about the world around them, revising their knowledge of 'Countries of the UK' and 'Continents', looking at human and physical features on our coastlines and developing their map reading skills, as well as a 'Countries Project'. Woodpeckers will increase their computer literacy using a range of programmes. They will learn about algorithms, how to stay safe online, how to code, make music digitally and create digital art.

Our new ‘Above and Beyond’ sessions will give children time to experience a range of special activities, such as cooking, sewing, arts and crafts, outdoor skills and more. Their weekly Forest School sessions will continue every Friday. During ‘Wellbeing’ sessions, Woodpeckers will also learn how to keep their minds healthy through Yoga, nature connectedness and mindfulness.

In PE lessons, children will take part in gymnastics, dance and athletics. They will also have weekly sessions with our sports coaches to improve their football, touch rugby, kwik cricket, basketball and hockey skills. All this will culminate in a ‘Sports Day Spectacular’ during the Summer term.

A number of workshops and trips will take place throughout the year to bring learning to life for the children and you shall be advised about these in due course. For offsite activities, we shall require parents/carers to help supervise the children. Please fill in the relevant part of the forms and return if you are able to provide support.

Finally we look forward to sharing with you our wonderful Christmas Nativity production as well as our Woodpeckers class assembly later in the school year – both a ‘must see’ and for which the children rehearse very hard and thoroughly enjoy performing to an audience. Thank you for visiting our page, and please contact Miss Hemmingham, the Woodpecker class teacher, with any queries you might have throughout the year.

Farnham's Got Talent

Weydon School, March 2023

A group of our Woodpecker children gave a fantastic performance of 'I Won't Grow Up' from Peter Pan for the Farnham Confederation of Schools' annual Farnham's Got Talent Competition on 9th March 2023. The following morning they performed again for the school and family members who were not able to attend the evening event. We are very proud of them!
